Our Series A reflects the traction achieved by our lean but eclectic team of four, who have already shipped two highly popular products. Now, we’re proud to partner with Coatue, an historically outspoken supporter of the open source AI movement, to expand the team and improve the explainability and accessibility of AI for everyone.
Current large language model (LLM) technology is concentrated in the hands of a very small number of companies with outsized access to compute resources and diminishing transparency. Without urgent action, the benefits that LLMs can bring to the world may be equally concentrated.
To ensure that AI benefits everyone, we believe it’s critical to maintain a vibrant, collaborative, open-source ecosystem. Moreover, we believe that freely accessible code, datasets, documentation, and model weights are all crucial for AI auditability and explainability. At Nomic, we aim to build a business with this mission at its core.
This fundraise will enable Nomic to improve upon our existing product suite, which includes our Atlas data engine and our open source edge model ecosystem, GPT4All.
Atlas is a data engine equipped with the world’s most scalable embedding space explorer. Atlas allows users to explore, label, search, share, and build on massive unstructured datasets using their web browser. Engineers from leading AI organizations including Google, Hugging Face, Scale AI, and Nvidia have all mapped their data using the Atlas platform. We believe it won’t stop there: as we enter an era defined by AI, the ability to visually explore and understand the massive datasets that AI models are both trained on and which they themselves produce will become increasingly critical. This fundraise will help us ensure that AI explainability tooling like Atlas keeps pace with AI deployment in high stakes domains like defense, medicine, and finance.
Most people have come to know Nomic through GPT4All, our open source edge language model ecosystem. At the time of writing, more than 50,000 monthly active users are experimenting and building with our open source, free-to-use, locally running, privacy-aware chatbot. Even more users interact with our ecosystem through Rift, a locally running code copilot built in collaboration with ReplIt and morph.so.
