Announcing the release of GPT4All 3.0: The Open-Source Local LLM Desktop App!

This new version marks the 1-year anniversary of the GPT4All project by Nomic. It brings a comprehensive overhaul and redesign of the entire interface and LocalDocs user experience.

With GPT4All now the 3rd fastest-growing GitHub repository of all time, boasting over 250,000 monthly active users, 65,000 GitHub stars, and 70,000 monthly Python package downloads, we are thrilled to share this next chapter with you.

A Year of Progress at Lightning Speed

Reflecting at this milestone on the project’s history and how significantly it has evolved, we wanted to share that our commitment to our goals - expanding access to LLMs and making this important technology accessible to all locally and privately - remains steadfast.

Our journey began with a desire to ensure that AI remains accessible and transparent amid concerns about the potential monopolization by large corporations. With the advent of LLMs we introduced our own local model - GPT4All 1.0 - based on Stanford's Alpaca model and Nomic, Inc’s unique tooling for production of a clean finetuning dataset.

We then were the first to release a modern, easily accessible user interface for people to use local large language models with a cross platform installer that just worked on normal devices.

While others have since released user interfaces, they are for the most part closed and proprietary projects that do not emphasize privacy. Furthermore, the ability to fully utilize LLMs is too often bottlenecked by fluency with this new technology.

Reinforcing Our Commitment to the Community

Now, thousands of powerful LLMs are being developed every day, and can be run by a growing audience of hundreds of thousands of users who share our concerns about privacy and control over this revolutionary technology.

With GPT4All 3.0 we again aim to simplify, modernize, and make accessible LLM technology for a broader audience of people - who need not be software engineers, AI developers, or machine language researchers, but anyone with a computer interested in LLMs, privacy, and software ecosystems founded on transparency and open-source.

What's New in GPT4All 3.0?

Redesign

The new user interface has been completely redesigned with the artistry of Nomic’s Vincent Giardina. The new design aims to provide a modern application flow through views instead of dialogs, making it more intuitive for new users who want the most uncluttered and user-friendly experience possible when using LLMs.

Enhanced LocalDocs

LocalDocs allows anyone to augment an LLM chat privately with knowledge from their own local files. It is imperative that users have the option of a private experience, ensuring their data remains their own device and is not sent to corporations seeking to control access to user data for the purposes of improving their own AI technology.

After iterating with the community on their preferences through previous versions, we are excited to present the redesigned LocalDocs featuring a revamped local vector database, the latest Nomic Embed Text v1.5, and a more stable and professional overall experience.

Looking Ahead

We are dedicated to continuously listening to user feedback and improving GPT4All in line with our commitments to the project's goals. Many more features are in the works to further enhance LocalDocs performance, usability, and quality as we continue to innovate and expand access to LLMs for all.

Thank You!

Our deepest gratitude goes out to our users, contributors, and the entire community who’ve been alongside us this past year. Your support and feedback have been invaluable in shaping GPT4All into what it is today. Special shout out and thank you to Kitware - the makers of CMake! - who have contributed valuable expertise towards signing and building our installers. We look forward to another year of growth, innovation, and collaboration. Stay tuned and make sure you subscribe to our newsletter!
