AI for IFC Files
AI technology for analyzing Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) BIM files.
Definition
AI for IFC files can work with the open BIM standard format, enabling analysis of models from any BIM software. IFC support allows AI to work with federated models from multiple sources. This enables platform-independent BIM analysis and coordination.
In Depth
IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the open standard for BIM data exchange, enabling models created in any BIM platform — Revit, ArchiCAD, Bentley, Vectorworks — to be shared, combined, and analyzed using a common format. AI that works with IFC files provides platform-independent BIM intelligence.
The interoperability advantage is significant for projects where multiple disciplines use different software. An architectural model in Revit, a structural model in Tekla, and an MEP model in MagiCAD can all be exported to IFC and analyzed together by AI. The AI does not need a license for each BIM platform; it reads the IFC data directly and understands the spatial relationships, property data, and type information in the model.
IFC also enables AI analysis of models from firms that use less common BIM platforms. A small structural engineering firm using Allplan or a landscape architect using Vectorworks can export IFC files that receive the same AI analysis as Revit models. This levels the playing field for AI adoption across the AEC industry, regardless of each firm's software choices.
