AI for Schedule Extraction
AI for extracting and analyzing schedules from construction drawings.
Definition
AI for schedule extraction pulls data from door schedules, window schedules, fixture schedules, and other tabular information on drawings. AI can structure this data for further analysis and verification. This automates schedule data capture.
In Depth
Construction drawings often contain schedule information in tabular form — door schedules, finish schedules, equipment schedules, room data schedules — embedded directly in the drawing sheets. AI schedule extraction reads these tables and converts them into structured data that can be searched, compared, and analyzed.
The extraction challenge is that schedules on drawings are formatted for human reading, not machine processing. They use abbreviations, reference keynotes, merge cells, and sometimes split across multiple sheets. A door schedule might list "HM" for hollow metal, reference hardware group "D" (defined in the hardware spec), and show the fire-rating as "1.5" (meaning 1.5-hour rated, with additional requirements depending on the wall rating). AI interprets all of these conventions in context.
Once extracted, schedule data enables cross-referencing that catches common coordination errors. AI can verify that every door shown on the floor plans appears in the door schedule, that every finish reference on the plans corresponds to an entry in the finish schedule, and that the room numbers are consistent between the architectural plans, reflected ceiling plans, and MEP plans. These consistency checks prevent the kind of errors that generate RFIs during construction.
