AI Symbol Recognition for Drawings

Construction drawings use hundreds of different symbols — from standard symbols defined by ANSI and CSI to firm-specific symbols that vary by region and practice. AI symbol recognition identifies these symbols, classifies them by type, and connects them to their meaning in the context of the drawing.

The symbol vocabulary includes door and window symbols (with hardware and fire-rating annotations), plumbing fixture symbols, electrical device symbols, mechanical equipment symbols, structural section callouts, and annotation symbols like section cuts, detail callouts, and elevation markers. Each symbol carries information that AI extracts and connects to the project's specifications and schedules.

For firms with drawing archives spanning decades, symbol conventions change over time. A door symbol used in the 1990s may look different from the current firm standard.
