Dimension Extraction AI

AI that reads and verifies dimensions from drawings.

Definition

Dimension Extraction AI automatically reads dimension strings, tolerances, and measurement annotations from construction drawings. These systems can extract dimensions for quantity takeoff, verify dimension accuracy, check for missing dimensions, and compare dimensions across related drawings.

In Depth

Dimension extraction reads the dimensional information from construction drawings — room sizes, corridor widths, ceiling heights, setback distances, and element sizes — and converts it into structured data that can be used for compliance checking, quantity takeoffs, and design verification.

The technical challenge is that dimensions on drawings come in various formats and contexts. A room width might be shown as a direct dimension between walls, or it might need to be calculated from the column grid spacing minus the column width minus the wall thickness. A ceiling height might be shown as a direct dimension on a section, noted in a room data sheet, or implied by the building section's floor-to-floor height minus the structural depth. AI handles all of these representation methods.

For code compliance checking, dimension extraction is the foundation. Checking whether a corridor meets the code-required minimum width requires reading the dimension from the drawing. Checking whether an accessible route provides adequate maneuvering clearance at a door requires reading the clearance dimension. Checking whether exit separation distance meets the code requires measuring from the drawing. Each of these checks depends on accurate dimension extraction as the first step.
